How to Rent Trekking Gear in Nepal: A Complete Guide

Buying a full set of high-altitude trekking gear can cost USD 2000-3000. Renting makes sense if you only trek occasionally. Here’s our complete guide to renting gear in Nepal.

What to Rent vs Bring

Rent in Nepal: Sleeping bag, down jacket, backpack, trekking poles, sleeping pad, crampons, ice axe, climbing harness.

Bring from home: Hiking boots (break them in first!), base layers, underwear, socks, headlamp (if picky), sunglasses (if prescription).

Cost

Daily rates in Kathmandu and Pokhara range from USD 1-6 per item, depending on quality. A complete package runs USD 12-30 per day. Our packages range from USD 12/day (Poon Hill) to USD 32/day (Mera Peak).

How the Deposit Works

Each rental requires a refundable security deposit, typically USD 30-100 per item or USD 100-400 for a package. The deposit is refunded in full when you return the gear in good condition. We accept cash (USD, EUR, NPR) and credit cards.

Hotel Delivery

We deliver free to hotels in Thamel (Kathmandu) and Lakeside (Pokhara). Just provide your hotel name and room number at checkout. We pick up at the same location when you return.

Quality

Always inspect rental gear before leaving the shop. Check sleeping bag zippers, jacket closures, backpack straps, and crampon bindings. Reputable shops (like Trekgear Nepal) launder and inspect every item between rentals.

What If Gear Breaks?

Normal wear is expected and not charged. Significant damage is deducted from your deposit at fair repair cost. Always notify the shop immediately if gear fails on trek — we can often arrange a replacement.

Booking

You can book online up to 6 months in advance, or walk into our Thamel or Pokhara stores. Online booking is recommended during peak season (October-November) to guarantee availability.
