Mardi Himal Trek: The Perfect Short Trek for Beginners

Mardi Himal Trek: The Perfect Short Trek for Beginners

If you’re short on time or new to trekking, the Mardi Himal Trek is the perfect introduction to the Himalayas. This 5-day route climbs through rhododendron forest to High Camp (3580m) and then to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4500m), where you stand face-to-face with the iconic fishtail peak of Machapuchare (6993m).

The Route

Day 1: Drive from Pokhara to Kande, then trek to Pothana (1890m). Day 2: Pothana to Forest Camp (2520m) through dense rhododendron. Day 3: Forest Camp to High Camp (3580m). Day 4: Pre-dawn climb to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4500m), then descend to Badal Danda. Day 5: Badal Danda to Sidding village, then drive to Pokhara.

Why Mardi Himal?

Mardi Himal is the closest thing to a “secret” trek in the Annapurna region — far fewer trekkers than Poon Hill or ABC, with even better close-up mountain views. The rhododendron forest is spectacular in spring (March-April).

Gear

Mardi Himal is moderate — no technical sections. A -5°C sleeping bag, fleece, light rain shell, and trekking poles are sufficient. Our Mardi Himal package is just USD 15/day.

Permits

You need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP, NPR 3000) and the TIMS card (NPR 2000).

Best Season

March-April (rhododendron bloom) and October-November (clear views).
