Porters and Guides: Ethical Trekking in Nepal

Nepal’s trekking industry employs over 100,000 porters. Here’s how to trek ethically and ensure your porter (and you) has a safe trip.

Porter Weight Limits

The International Porter Protection Group (IPPG) recommends porters carry no more than 25kg (55lb) — or 20kg if trekking above 4000m. Most reputable trekking agencies cap loads at 20-25kg. Your duffel bag should weigh no more than 12-15kg (the porter carries multiple duffels, plus their own gear).

Fair Wages

A qualified porter should earn NPR 1500-2000/day (USD 12-16), plus food and lodging. A guide earns NPR 2500-3500/day (USD 20-28). If a porter is carrying for a group, they should be paid the porter rate plus food/lodging — not a flat fee.

Insurance

Reputable agencies insure their porters for medical care and emergency evacuation. Ask to see proof. If you hire a porter independently, you are responsible for their safety — buy them helicopter rescue insurance (NPR 2000-3000 per porter for a 2-week trek).

Gear for Porters

Porters often come from lowland regions and lack cold-weather gear. Provide them with: a warm jacket, a sleeping bag, trekking boots, gloves, and a hat. Many shops in Kathmandu (including Trekgear Nepal) rent “porter kits” at low cost.

Hire a Guide?

For restricted-area treks (Manaslu, Mustang, Dolpo, Kanchenjunga), a licensed guide is mandatory. For other treks, hiring a guide costs USD 25-35/day and adds significant value: local knowledge, language translation, route finding, emergency response, and cultural interpretation. We recommend guides for first-timers and solo trekkers.

Tipping

Standard tip: USD 2-3/day for porters (lump sum at the end), USD 4-6/day for guides. Tip in NPR or USD cash on the last morning of the trek.

Signs of an Unethical Operator

• Porters wearing sneakers or sandals in the snow.
• Porters carrying more than 25kg.
• Porters without sleeping bags or jackets.
• No insurance or medical kit.
• Wages way below NPR 1500/day.
