Kanchenjunga Trek: Nepal’s Most Remote Base Camp

The Kanchenjunga Trek is for trekkers who have done everything else. This 22-day expedition reaches both the north (Pangpema, 5143m) and south (Oktang, 4730m) base camps of the world’s third-highest mountain (8586m), in Nepal’s remote far east.

The Route

After a long drive or flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, then Taplejung, the trek follows the Tamur and Ghunsa rivers. The north base camp at Pangpema is reached via Ghunsa and Kambachen. The south base camp at Oktang is reached via Yamphudin. Crossing between them via several 4000m+ passes is the challenge.

Why Kanchenjunga?

Raw remoteness, no crowds, dense forest in the lower valleys, and dramatic high-altitude landscapes. You’ll see yaks, blue sheep, and possibly snow leopard tracks. The mountain views from Pangpema are unmatched — Kanchenjunga towers 3500m above you.

Gear

This is expedition-grade trekking. You need a -25°C sleeping bag, a 4-season tent (some sections have no lodges), an 80L pack, crampons, and an ice axe for the pass crossings. Our Kanchenjunga package includes all of this for USD 25/day.

Permits

Kanchenjunga is a restricted area. You need the Restricted Area Permit (USD 20/week for the first 4 weeks), Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (NPR 2000), and a licensed guide.

Best Season

March to May and September to November only. The passes are impassable in winter and the lower valleys are leech-infested in monsoon.
