Best Sleeping Bag for a Nepal Trek
# Best Sleeping Bag for a Nepal Trek
Teahouse rooms on the Everest, Annapurna and Manaslu circuits are unheated at night. At 4,000m+ the temperature regularly drops below freezing. Choosing the right sleeping bag is one of the most important gear decisions you will make.
## Temperature Rating
For most Nepal teahouse treks you need a sleeping bag rated to **-10°C comfort**. This covers:
– Everest Base Camp (Gorak Shep, 5,140m)
– Annapurna Circuit (Thorong Phedi, 4,450m)
– Manaslu Circuit (Dharamsala, 4,460m)
If you run cold or trek in winter, consider a -15°C bag.
## Down vs Synthetic
– **Down** — warmer for the weight, packs smaller, but loses loft if wet and costs more.
– **Synthetic (hollowfibre)** — keeps some warmth when damp, cheaper, but heavier and bulkier.
For teahouse trekking where porters carry the bag, a synthetic -10°C bag is the sweet spot of price, reliability and warmth.
## Shape
A **mummy bag** traps heat far better than a rectangular bag. The tapered shape reduces the volume of air your body must heat.
## Rent vs Buy
A quality -10°C bag costs $150–300 to buy and weighs 1.5kg to fly across the world. Renting in Kathmandu or Pokhara costs around $5/day and the bag is delivered to your hotel. For a single trek, renting almost always wins.
## Our Recommendation
Our rental fleet uses the TrailPro -10°C mummy bag — warm, reliable and cleaned between every rental. Reserve yours and have it delivered to your hotel.
