Mera Peak: Nepal’s Highest Trekking Peak

Mera Peak (6476m) is the highest trekking peak in Nepal. It’s non-technical — no vertical ice or rock — but the altitude and glacier travel make it a serious undertaking. The reward is a summit view of five of the world’s six highest peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Kangchenjunga.

The Trip

The 18-21 day expedition begins with a flight to Lukla, then takes a remote route away from the EBC trail through the Hinku Valley. After acclimatization at Khare (5000m) and Mera La (5415m), you climb to High Camp (5780m) and attempt the summit the next morning.

Skills Required

You need to walk confidently in crampons on a 30° glacier, use an ice axe for self-arrest, and clip into a fixed rope. A 2-day training session at Base Camp covers these skills.

Gear

Mera is genuinely cold — High Camp nights drop to -25°C. You need a -25°C sleeping bag, plastic mountaineering boots, full crampons/ice axe/harness/helmet, and a 4-season tent for High Camp. Our Mera Peak package covers everything for USD 32/day.

Permits

Makalu Barun National Park Permit, plus NMA Peak Permit (USD 70 spring, USD 35 autumn).

Best Season

April-May and October-November only. The high camp is impassable in winter.
