Trekking Pole Guide: Do You Need Them in Nepal?
# Trekking Pole Guide: Do You Need Them in Nepal?
Short answer: almost certainly yes. Trekking poles reduce impact on your knees by up to 25% on descents — and Nepal treks have a lot of descents.
## The Benefits
– Reduce knee and joint impact on long descents
– Improve balance on loose, rocky and wet terrain
– Help establish a rhythm on climbs
– Take weight off your legs on flat sections
## When You Need Them
Essential on the Annapurna Circuit (the descent from Thorong La is brutal on knees), EBC (descents from Kala Patthi and Namche), and any trek with high passes.
## Technique
– Adjust length: shorter for uphill, longer for downhill
– Use the wrist straps — let the strap take the load, don’t grip tightly
– Plant poles in pairs for rhythm
## Rent vs Buy
A decent pair costs $60–150 to buy and is awkward to fly with. Renting in Nepal costs about $1.50/day. For a single trek, renting wins. Our adjustable aluminium poles rent for $8/week.
