Gokyo Lakes Trek: Turquoise Lakes and the Best Everest View
The Gokyo Lakes Trek is the EBC alternative for trekkers who want fewer crowds and the best panoramic view of Everest. The route follows the Dudh Koshi river north to a chain of six turquoise glacial lakes at 4700-5000m, then climbs Gokyo Ri (5357m) for an unmatched 360° panorama.
The Route
The first 5 days are the same as EBC to Namche, then the trail splits north at Sanasa. You’ll climb through Phortse Tenga, Dole, Luza, Machhermo, and finally Gokyo (4790m). Day 7 is the climb of Gokyo Ri (5357m) for sunrise. The return is via the same trail, or via Cho La pass to EBC.
Why Gokyo?
The Gokyo Lakes are sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. The view from Gokyo Ri includes four 8000m peaks (Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu) plus the dramatic Ngozumpa Glacier — the largest in the Khumbu. And it’s much quieter than EBC.
Gear
Gokyo is the same altitude as EBC, so the gear list is identical. You need a -15°C sleeping bag, a down jacket, trekking poles, and Cat 4 sunglasses. Our Gokyo package is USD 22/day.
Permits
Same as EBC: Sagarmatha National Park Permit (NPR 3000) and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Permit (NPR 2000).
Best Season
October-November and March-May.
