Manaslu Circuit Trek: The Ultimate Restricted-Area Adventure

If you’ve already done the popular treks and want something more remote, the Manaslu Circuit is the answer. This 14-18 day restricted-area trek circles the world’s eighth-highest mountain (8163m) and crosses the 5106m Larkya La pass. Trekkers see relatively few foreigners compared to EBC or Annapurna.

The Route

The trek begins with a 7-hour jeep ride from Kathmandu to Soti Khola, then follows the Budhi Gandaki river upstream through dense forest and Tibetan-style villages. After the acclimatization village of Samagaon (3520m), the route crosses the Larkya La (5106m) — a long, exposed pass day requiring crampons in shoulder seasons.

Manaslu offers authentic Tibetan Buddhist culture, fewer crowds, dramatic deep-valley scenery, and a challenging high-pass crossing. The trade-off is the long drive in and the restricted-area permit requirement.

Permits Required

Three permits: Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (USD 100/week peak, USD 75/week off-peak), Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (NPR 3000), and Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (NPR 3000). You must trek with a licensed guide and a minimum of two trekkers.

Gear for the Larkya La

The pass day is the crux. You need crampons, an ice axe (in shoulder season), a -20°C down jacket, and a windproof shell. Our Manaslu package includes all of this for USD 22/day.

Best Season

September to November and March to May. Avoid December-February due to deep snow on the pass.
