Island Peak Climbing: Nepal’s Most Popular Trekking Peak

Island Peak (Imja Tse, 6189m) is the most popular trekking peak in Nepal. It’s called Island Peak because it looks like an island in a sea of ice when viewed from Dingboche. The climb is non-technical but requires crampons, rope, and a fixed line on the headwall — a perfect first mountaineering experience.

The Trip

Most expeditions combine an EBC trek with the Island Peak climb: 16-18 days total. You trek to EBC first for acclimatization, then traverse to Island Peak Base Camp (5087m). The summit day starts at 2am, climbing to High Camp (5600m) then up a 100m headwall with fixed rope to the summit.

Climbing Skills Required

You need basic mountaineering skills: walking in crampons, using an ice axe, ascending a fixed rope with a jumar, and rappelling. Most guiding services offer a half-day training session at Base Camp.

Gear

Island Peak requires full mountaineering gear: plastic boots, crampons, ice axe, climbing harness, helmet, jumar, and a down jacket rated to -25°C. Our Island Peak package includes everything for USD 30/day.

Permits

Sagarmatha National Park Permit, Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Permit, plus the NMA Peak Permit (USD 70 for spring, USD 35 for autumn).

Best Season

April-May and October-November. Avoid winter — the headwall becomes a serious ice climb.
