Tsum Valley Trek: Nepal’s Sacred Hidden Valley

The Tsum Valley is one of Nepal’s most sacred hidden valleys, opened to trekkers only in 2008. This 14-day trek branches off the Manaslu Circuit and climbs into a Tibetan Buddhist enclave where ancient monasteries still practice Bon-Po rituals and where polyandry was practiced until recently.

The Route

From the Manaslu trail at Philim, the route climbs east into the Tsum Valley. You’ll visit Mu Gompa (3700m), the largest monastery in the valley, and the Milarepa Cave where the 11th-century poet-saint meditated. The valley is ringed by the Ganesh Himal and Sringi Himal ranges.

Tsum offers authentic Tibetan Buddhist culture untouched by tourism, ancient monasteries, dramatic mountain cirques, and a deep sense of being “off the map.” You’ll see fewer than 50 other trekkers during a 14-day trek.

Gear

Tsum is moderate — no high passes. A -10°C sleeping bag, down jacket, rain shell, and trekking poles are sufficient. Our Tsum Valley package is USD 18/day.

Permits

Manaslu Restricted Area Permit is required even if you don’t continue on the Manaslu Circuit. Also the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit.

Best Season

March-May and October-November.
