# Three Passes Trek Complete Guide
The Three Passes trek is the ultimate Everest region loop, crossing three 5,000m+ passes: Renjo La (5,360m), Cho La (5,420m) and Kongma La (5,535m). It is harder and more rewarding than the standard EBC trek.
## Route
The typical 18–21 day loop starts from Lukla and visits Namche, Thame, Gokyo, EBC, Chhukung and back. You can start from either direction.
## Passes
– **Renjo La (5,360m)** — Gokyo to Marlung. Best views of Everest.
– **Cho La (5,420m)** — Gokyo to Dzongla. Can have snow/ice.
– **Kongma La (5,535m)** — Chhukung to Lobuche. Highest and hardest.
## Gear
You need expedition-grade gear for this trek. The Three Passes package includes:
– -15°C down sleeping bag
– Expedition down jacket
– Rain shell
– Trekking poles
– Duffel + daypack
– Headlamp (500 lumen)
## Difficulty
Hard. You need excellent fitness, altitude acclimatisation, and confidence on snow and scree. Not for first-time trekkers.
## Best Time
March–May and October–November. Avoid winter (passes may be blocked by snow) and monsoon (cloudy views).
